{Essay} Theater on Two Wheels

Theatre.

That single word alone conjures tiny shudders up and down my spine at the thought of my first theatrical experience. It was during one of those shaping-who-you-are years of high-school and I attended an opera on the UT campus. My literature teacher described the theater as a cultural and learning experience. I remember ladies’ toes peaking out beneath floor length formal dresses, and gentlemen were reminiscent of penguins in black and white tuxedos. I felt under-dressed in my cotton dress and out of place without a shade of black in my clothing. I left at the end of the show confused by all of the social nuances of attending a theater performance, and bored after 2 hours of sitting in a dark auditorium.

Pre-face the word theater with bike, and the result is the antithesis of opera in an auditorium. Instead, you get Bike Noir, theater via bicycle....{Check out the complete essay at Austin On Two Wheels}

I am an Austin mom on two wheels. It is an autobiographical story about an experience riding a bike in Austin where previously I might have done so by car.

I’m one of those happy and proud Austinites that rides my bike(s) just about everywhere. If I was to put a label on my bicycle riding self, I’d steal the term “The Self Righteous Cyclist” from BikeSnob NYC’s self titled book. I lay somewhere between “believing that cycling helps make me a better person” and “that bicycling can actually save the world.”

So, when I saw the call for entries for My Ride Writing Contest, I didn’t think I could compete. I’m lucky to live in east central Austin and I have easy access with my bicycle to the grocery store, bike-pool the kids to school, to work, even to Mexico via bicycle (insert shout-out to Bike Across Borders here)…I’d gotten almost all my bases covered via bicycle....read the complete essay here at the Austin on Two Wheels Blog Site.

The 9-week class will include both the children and their parents/caregivers and the residents of the homes. The class at Renaissance-Austin Retirement Residence will be lead by Edie Elkjer on Wednesdays at 10:15am beginning January 12th, 2011. The class at Emmeritus of Austin will be lead by Becca Myers on Thursdays at 10:00am beginning January 13th, 2011.

This Halloween, I know 5 separate little people that all chose to be cardinals. I was a brown mama cardinal, and our friends stuck with the animal theme too: cats, tigers, and deers. Oh My! The 3 year olds finally "got" Halloween and were amazed with all the candy: "My bags to heavy. Can you carry it for me?". Sweet fun and sugary mouths!

My favorite things I like having close to home and heart. One of my favorite things are wild flowers in spring. There is a fun little spot of bluebonnets growing right outside of the UT Pickle Research Center off of North Burnet. Close to home and close to my heart! Baby Lexie was adorable with her big brown eyes and smooth skin. She might have not noticed the flowers, yet she loved cuddling with her Mommy, and staying close to her Mommy's heart.

She looked so adorable in her Easter outfit, that I snapped a few shots while she watched the rain from the back of her car.

I love creating depth in a photograph with objects in the foreground. Sophie really enjoyed the plants and flowers at Mayfield Nature Preserve, and both create lots of depth in a photo.

Sophie was such a trooper and explorer. It was quite foggy and misty this morning, yet she tromped through it all and got her pretty pink sandles muddy...all with a smile.

Heart Song Music

A new motto that comes to mind about Heart Song Music is "Wheresoever you go, sing with all your heart."

The day after the event photo session at Heart Song Music, I found myself consciously singing more, singing to the world around me and especially to my two year old daughter. "To fill a room with cheer, sing for all to hear...", and that is exactly what I did! My heart felt so much lighter with a song in it. :)
